In 1813 he was granted 44 acres on the beautiful Coal River now full of trout, rejoicing in a playful platypus family, picnic sites and natural swimming pools. A romantic, Lieutenant Gunning constructed one of the only sandstone cantilevered staircases in Tasmania, a beautifully proportioned drawing room, a large comprehensive library, and a distinctive and intimate dining room. Campania House offers colonial accommodation on three levels.
