Campania House

Estate Road, Campania03 6260 4281
The construction of Campania House in sandstone and cedar in the classical Georgian design was begun by George Weston Gunning of 73rd Regiment shortly after his arrival in Van Diemans Land in 1810. In 1813 he was granted 44 acres on the beautiful Coal River now full of trout, rejoicing in a playful platypus family, picnic sites and natural swimming pools. A romantic, Lieutenant Gunning constructed one of the only sandstone cantilevered staircases in Tasmania, a beautifully proportioned drawing room, a large comprehensive library, and a distinctive and intimate dining room. Campania House offers colonial accommodation on three levels. Formal bedrooms on the first floor with open fires and heating in every room, bright cosy attics on the top floor with views over the verdant Valley. A comprehensive cellar stocking all the wines of the district compliments fresh local produce and all vegetarian needs.
